The Day of Surgery

Please be sure to follow these guidelines on the day of your surgery. If you have any questions regarding any of the information on this page, please contact the surgery center.

DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight unless otherwise instructed.

DO NOT take any medications the morning of the surgery. Exceptions to this rule are allowed if you take medication for the following: blood pressure, heart, thyroid, anti-ulcer and anti-nausea - If you take these medications in the morning, take them the day of surgery with the smallest amount of water possible.

Blood thinners must be stopped 5 DAYS before surgery (including ibuprofen and ASA).

If you are a diabetic and take insulin or oral hypoglycemic medication, DO NOT take it the morning of surgery.

If you have any questions about any of your meds, please call the surgery center or bring them with you the day of surgery.

On the day of surgery, you must bring a most current list of all the medications you take including doses, how often they are taken, and the last time you took them.

It may be helpful to bring a pillow for your car ride home.

Wear loose, comfortable, easily removable clothing.

Leave your valuables and jewelry at home. NO JEWELRY OR BODY PIERCINGS MAY BE WORN. IF NECESSARY, RINGS WILL BE CUT OFF. 

DO NOT WEAR MAKEUP, FALSE EYELASHES, OR NAIL POLISH.

If you would like to bring an iPod or other small cassette/cd player with earphones to use pre, intra or post operatively, please do so as long as it has identification on it.

Because changes do occur, we ask that the person taking you home remain at the surgery center until your discharge.
